MILWAUKEE -- Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo and a clubhouse attendant were robbed at gunpoint early Friday, hours after the Milwaukee ace pitched in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Brewers spokesman Tyler Barnes confirmed that Gallardo and Alex Sanchez were robbed, but both were doing fine and did not want to discuss the incident.

A police spokeswoman did not immediately return messages seeking details.
According to WTMJ-AM, an armed man approached the two in a supermarket parking lot demanding money and jewelry and that Sanchez was hit in the head, but not seriously injured.

Brewers infield prospect Brett Lawrie has started to heat up in the month of August.

Lawrie, a second baseman playing for Double-A Huntsville of the Southern League, is hitting .311/.340/.533 with nine RBI over his last 10 games.

He hasn't displayed much patience, however, striking out 10 times over the same period with just one walk (he's got 101/38 for the year).

The right-handed hitting 20-year-old has hit .341/.403/.571 against left-handed pitching this season.

Lawrie has spent all of 2010 playing for Huntsville with an OPS of .815.

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers plan to unveil a statue honoring baseball commissioner and former owner Bud Selig on Aug. 24.

Selig's likeness will join those of Henry Aaron and Robin Yount in front of Miller Park. Selig's foundation donated the first two statues at the stadium.

Selig's statue will be cast in bronze and measure more than seven feet tall. It was designed and produced by Brian Maughan, who also created the Yount and Aaron sculptures.

Selig returned Major League Baseball to his hometown of Milwaukee in 1970 when he founded the Milwaukee Brewers. He was owner and president of the Brewers before becoming commissioner in 1998.

Brewers owner Mark Attanasio told Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the club needs to improve its pitching. Based on recent history, Attanasio seems more inclined to improve the team's pitching through trades than free agency.

After signing Randy Wolf to a three-year, $29.75MM contract and Doug Davis to a one-year, $5.25MM pact (including the $1MM buyout), the Brewers went on to own the third-worst ERA in the National League. According to Walker, "that experience made Attanasio reconsider whether signing free agent pitchers works." Of course, the last time that Attanasio signed off on a trade for a star pitcher, the results were very different.

"When you look at all of the trades, CC [Sabathia] was a once-in-a-decade trade for any team," the owner said. "Very few of these deadline trades actually make a difference. You can look at the record on that and see what they do."

Attanasio also said that it is a "foregone conclusion" that the club will lose money this year after experiencing a 9.2% drop in attendance, the second biggest decline in the NL next to the Mets. It will be even more difficult for the club to reach agreement with Prince Fielder on a contract extension with such a hit to the bottom line.
